Hi Reader,
This month I wrote a piece for the British Chamber of Commerce Dubai's member newsletter, and I wanted to share the thinking with you too, because it applies wherever your business happens to be based.
It's about Q4, and the way most of us treat it as a sprint. Hit the targets, wrap up the year, then squeeze next year's planning in around the edges. By December the plan for the new year is built on what energy you have left, and January opens with the same bottlenecks you had in September.
Revenue will tell you how the year went but it won't tell you why, or what's likely to repeat if nothing changes. That story sits in the operational layer underneath, and that's where I'd encourage you to review this quarter.
The article covers five areas. Here are the key points:
Where your team's time went. Not the plan, the reality. If core people kept being pulled outside their role, that usually points to an unclear process or a decision with no owner to make it, rather than a need for another hire.
What broke under pressure. The launch that wobbled, the deadline that slipped because two people assumed the other had it. Those moments show you exactly where the gap is.
What's running on effort rather than process. Look closely at the things you're proudest of this year. Are they repeatable, or did someone push them through because that's just what they do?
Where growth outpaced your operations. Every new client, contract, service or offer brought its own complexity. Did your systems and structure keep up, or is extra effort now holding it all together?
What support looks like next year. Not only more people. Sometimes it's a clearer structure, a second-in-command, or a system that replaces a habit that's stopped serving you.
If you take one thing into your planning season, pick one of these five and give it an hour this month. Just one area, looked at with fresh eyes, will tell you more than another spreadsheet of formulas and figures.
And if you'd like a second pair of eyes on it, hit reply and tell me which of the five feels most familiar and I'll help you unravel what might hold you back as you move into next year.
Have a lovely week,
Katie
