Hi Reader,
Summer has a way of changing the pace, doesn’t it? Clients go quieter, replies slow down, the out-of-office replies start landing, and the calendar loosens in a way it rarely does the rest of the year. The urgency that drives most weeks just… eases off for a while.
It’s easy to treat that as dead time. A lull to push through, or worse, to feel faintly guilty about. We’re so used to measuring a good week by how full it was that a quiet one can feel like something’s gone wrong. So we fill it. We invent admin. We start a project we don’t really have the appetite for, just to feel productive again.
But the quiet is the point.
When the noise drops, you can finally hear how the business is actually running, not how it looks when you’re flat out and everything’s a blur, but how it holds up when you step back and stop holding all the pieces together by sheer force of attention.
That’s really hard to see when you’re busy. When you’re in it, every process feels fine because you’re the one making it work. It’s only when you slow down that you notice how much was running on you rather than on anything solid underneath.
So before you fill the space with busywork or another shiny project, try using it differently. Take an honest look at what’s been quietly working and what’s been quietly straining.
The processes you’ve outgrown. The tasks you keep meaning to fix but never have the headspace for. The things that only you know how to do, which is lovely for the ego and terrible for the business.
You don’t need a big plan or a fancy framework for this. Just a notebook and an hour somewhere comfortable, a garden, a café, anywhere that isn’t your desk. Three questions are plenty.
🤔 What’s running smoothly?
🤔 What keeps tripping me up?
🤔 And what would I really rather not carry into the next busy stretch?
Write down whatever comes. You’ll likely find the answers were there all along, just drowned out by the day-to-day. The quiet didn’t create the problems, it simply gave you space to notice them.
That’s not slacking off. That’s the kind of stocktake you can only really do when things go still. The busy season will be back soon enough. This is the window to make sure you meet it on better footing.
Have a lovely week,
Katie
